There are many options that you can consider when it comes to managing water run-off issues.
French drains
If you want a drainage system close to your building’s foundation, French drains are your best bet. These are simple trenches with perforated pipes, which are then filled with gravel. Groundwater drains from the surface into the perforated pipes, through which it empties into an open ditch or storm system.
Dry wells
Where there is no power source for a sump pump, dry wells are a great option. They’re built like the usual drainage systems, with the difference that there is a large well at the end of the line to capture water and hold it until it has leached out into the soil naturally.
Storm drains
You’ll find these drains in parking lots, streets, and at times, in yards. The drain opening is covered with a metal grate. These drains allow rainwater to pass through quickly into the storm sewage system. These pipes tend to empty into rivers and creeks.
Grading
This is a step usually implemented at the time of construction of a home or building. Grading is carried out to ensure a level base for the building with a certain slope on the sides. The slope is meant to divert rainwater away from the building.
In some cases, contractors make mistakes during construction leading to water pooling in some areas. These problems are corrected by moving the soil to the correct slope away from the home, allowing the water to move away in the right direction.
Dirt removal
Removal of excess soil in an area can also help improve drainage.
Berms
If your landscape has areas that flood often, you can have berms installed. Berms are barriers built to protect against water and can be used to direct water away to areas not affected by soil erosion. They can also be used to move water away from an area.
Retaining walls
Another great option is to have retaining walls built on your landscape. These help to create sloped layers that can slow water flow and create proper drainage for water coming down from higher areas. They are durable and add to the beauty of any landscape.
